Tips & Maintenance

What is 3/8" AR 500 Steel?

AR 500 steel is quenched & tempered through hardened wear resistant grades of abrasion resistant steel plate and used for severe impact. This is the industry standard for metal targets. It can withstand thousands of hits with very little wear.

How do I maintain my Pepper Poppers?

Our pepper poppers are made of 3/8" AR 500 steel.

If the target face begins to show wear it can be unbolted at the base and simply reversed, most customers will never need to do this unless shooting the target with high caliber rifles at less than 150 yards*.

Our hinging mechanism is custom designed for our products, which allows thousands of maintenance free cycles. If left outside in a harsh environment the bolting mechanism should be periodically lubricated to prevent surface rust from impairing the movement.

Our poppers are designed with a wide base plate at the front, and a rubber fall stopper. Ideally the target base would be set on a perfectly flat surface, and the target face would be tilted forward a few degrees. Since it is unrealistic to presume that all targets will be set up on an ideal platform, we have implemented a set screw design into the back of our hinging mechanism which allows the target face to be set forward or backwards to accommodate less then perfect terrain.

You can repaint our targets with white paint (or any color you choose) which allows for easier determination of exactly where your bullets are hitting it.

How do I maintain my Round Targets?

Our round target faces are made of 3/8" AR 500 steel. You can repaint our targets with white paint (or any color you choose) which allows for easier determination of exactly where your bullets are hitting it.

In order to prolong target life we do not recommend shooting any steel targets with any high caliber center fire rifle under 150 yards. We have tested our targets with .223/5.56 rounds at under 30 yards without showing excessive wear. We have tested our targets with hand gun rounds and rim-fire rounds within 1 yard without showing excessive wear. These are not "safe distances" this information is provided only to demonstrate the capability of the material.
WARNING! Target shooting of any kind is inherently dangerous. ALWAYS follow safety guidelines set forth by your shooting range. Although our targets are designed to specifications to increase target life, safety and consistency, shoot at your own risk.
